I don’t understand how the editor of PLAY could have deemed this the most important and relevant story of the week (especially the same week that a Tony Award-winning director premieres her latest work). I understand that profiles are a standard part of PLAY, but this article hardly served to provide insight on the Mee-Ow member. 8 cover story of PLAY that devotes two whole pages to essentially glorifying this undergraduate student. In no way is the following intended to criticize or attack him. It all started freshman year when we met Nick Kanellis in Willard Residential College.
Recognized for what, you ask? Everything. Nick Kanellis has finally been recognized. Finally, some brave soul has confronted the injustice that has plagued this university for three and a half years. Why are ugly female stereotypes any different? Pimps and Hos? Delta Tau Delta’s Anything for a Buck? What kind of woman could think so little of herself as to go to a party that essentially was labeling her as a whore? More importantly, how could these parties be registered with the university? Where are the voices of protest? Surely if this was a party mocking black, Asian or Hispanic stereotypes, the administration would have to act. Last year as a freshman, I remember being shocked to hear of such a party – and SAE’s event wasn’t the only frat party with a shocking title. The fraternities in question have issued apologies and promised that the offense will not be repeated.Īs I sat in class one morning waiting for the professor to start lecture, I couldn’t help but overhear several people discussing their plans to go to Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s party that evening – CEOs and Corporate Hos. Some black students are understandably deeply offended by these parties, and school officials have been quick to condemn them. Recently on several college campuses around the country, black students have complained to their schools’ administrations that white students are hosting parties that mock black stereotypes.
